Keeping a clean environment
Yesterday, while seated in a tricycle popularly known as Keke on my way to work, I looked out and saw a whole lot of pure water sachets, used plastic plates and bottles in a nearby gutter, this actually got me thinking. Is it not better to be safe than sorry. Why can't we learn to do the right things first. We first of all complain about the end result not aware that we have contributed to that result.Imagine how things are thrown out of a moving vehicle not caring what happens to them afterwards.
Some of the environmental hazards today are caused by these activities.Man has to care for the very environment where they dwell else he suffers greatly from its impacts.
Lagos especially has suffered from this.It is a place known to be heavily flooded when the rains come calling.Wastes in the streets somehow find their way into the gutters thereby causing the disruption of free flow of water in the gutter. This causes flood to happen and then a heavy traffic jam. This in turn disrupts the economic and other activities in Lagos causing delays in events and causing a stressful situation.
We need not live like this.We have the power to live more healthy thereby increasing life expectancy in Nigeria which is said to be in the fifties now.
Lagos observes a Thursday market sanitation whereby every thursdays shop owners clean their environs and are only allowed to open their businesses at 10am.This sanitation has not been strictly adhered to.The task force agents have not been effective in carrying out their duties making sure market areas are clean. Even when the gutters are cleared ,the rubbish from the gutters are not also cleared immediately, which ends up again back where they came from.
Keeping a clean environment in Lagos has been like putting a square peg in a round hole. There are also the cases of people defecating in open places,Septic tanks leaking into the streets, pollution from industries.
The government on the other hand has not done enough to ensure its citizens live in a healthy environment.Places in Lagos for example do not have proper ways of disposing waste, this has made residents dump them on the roadsides, making the environment one hell of a place.
Government has to sanitize its citizens on the effects of a dirty environment and also enforce rules on its citizens, punishing offenders. It also should make provisions for proper disposal of waste and human defecation kept in septic tanks.
By making conscious efforts from both government and citizens, Nigeria will be a better place to live in,this in turn improves our health thereby increasing life expectancy and making us truly happy people.
Nice write-up....
ReplyDeleteGreat piece.
ReplyDeleteI hope the government indulges but we as citizens can do our bit then crying to the government to help would be much easier from there.
